2

📊 Quantify your classroom or youth-work experience: e.g. 'Supervised classes of up to 30 KS3/KS4 students across 5 secondary schools over a 6-month supply contract'.

3

🔒 Explicitly state your DBS status in your CV header or personal statement — note whether it is on the Update Service, as this is a named requirement and speeds up placement.

4

🎯 Tailor your personal statement to reference Hackney specifically and your ability to work across multiple schools, mirroring the advert's emphasis on flexibility and variety.

5

🤝 Include a brief line on safeguarding awareness or any relevant training (e.g. Prevent, First Aid, Child Protection Level 1), as upholding safeguarding policies is explicitly listed as a core responsibility.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a challenging situation with a young person and how you resolved it.

Situation: During a cover lesson at a Hackney secondary school, a Year 9 student became verbally disruptive and refused to engage with the pre-set Maths worksheet, distracting the rest of the class. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly without removing the student unnecessarily or disrupting the other 27 pupils. Action: I calmly moved to the student's desk, spoke to him quietly so the class could not hear, acknowledged he found the task difficult, and offered a simplified starting point. I also reminded him of the school's behaviour policy in a non-confrontational way. Result: The student settled within five minutes and completed half the worksheet. I noted the incident in my end-of-lesson feedback to the class teacher, who followed up the next day.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change — how did you handle it?

Situation: I arrived at a school expecting to cover a Year 10 Geography lesson, but the pre-set work had not been left by the absent teacher. Task: I had to create a structured 60-minute session from scratch with no materials, for a class of 25 students I had never met. Action: I introduced a discussion-based activity around a current news topic related to Geography, set clear ground rules at the outset, and used the school's interactive whiteboard to display a map exercise I found on the school's shared drive with permission from the office. Result: The lesson ran without incident, students remained engaged throughout, and the Head of Geography thanked me for improvising effectively when she reviewed my feedback note.
