Our tips for applying

5 recommandations générées par notre IA pour maximiser vos chances.

1

⭐ Place your AMHP qualification and professional registration prominently in your Personal Statement, as the advert lists these as the first two essential requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your Mental Health Act assessment experience: e.g. 'Completed 120+ MHA assessments annually, coordinating safe admissions across 3 NHS Trusts'.

3

🎯 Explicitly reference your knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice in your CV summary, as the advert calls this out as a distinct requirement separate from the AMHP qualification.

4

🤝 Highlight any AMHP trainee supervision or mentoring experience, as the role includes mentoring trainees — this differentiates senior candidates in Hampshire's service.

5

🌐 Demonstrate experience of 24-hour or out-of-hours rota working in your work history, as the advert specifies a 24-hour service with shift patterns and a 14% shift allowance.

Aperçu — adapté à The Guardian

Dear Hiring Manager,

Hampshire's AMHP service has a strong reputation for multi-disciplinary collaboration and rigorous person-centred practice — precisely the environment in which I want to develop my career. I am applying for the Approved Mental Health Professional position based in Winchester, bringing a current AMHP qualification, extensive experience coordinating Mental Health Act assessments, and a thorough working knowledge of the Code of Practice.

My background in community mental health has seen me lead complex MHA assessments across a busy 24-hour rota, negotiating with individuals, families, and NHS colleagues to secure the least restrictive outcome. I have supervised two AMHP trainees through their practice portfolios and regularly provide legal guidance to multi-disciplinary colleagues on detention thresholds and aftercare obligations under Section 117.

1Question

Describe a time you had to make a complex detention decision under significant time pressure. How did you reach your conclusion?

Situation: A 34-year-old man with a history of bipolar disorder was brought to a Section 136 suite at 2am; two previous assessments that week had concluded without admission. Task: I needed to assess risk rapidly and determine whether the criteria for Section 3 were met, with a bed only available for 90 minutes before it would be reallocated. Action: I reviewed the previous assessment records, spoke directly with the man and his mother, and consulted the on-call psychiatrist to align on the clinical picture. I applied the least-restrictive principle but concluded the risk to his physical health warranted admission. Result: The Section 3 was completed within 75 minutes, the bed was secured, and a follow-up care plan was in place within 48 hours. He was discharged to a community package after 12 days.
2Question

Tell me about a situation where you had to negotiate with a resistant family member or carer during an MHA assessment. What was the outcome?

Situation: During a home assessment for a 58-year-old woman with severe depression, her husband refused entry and insisted she was 'just tired', despite a GP referral citing self-neglect and suicidal ideation. Task: I needed to gain access, complete a lawful assessment, and manage the family dynamic without escalating distress. Action: I spent 25 minutes on the doorstep explaining the purpose of the assessment in plain terms, acknowledged his concerns, and invited him to be present throughout. Once inside, I conducted a joint interview that allowed the woman to speak candidly. Result: The assessment confirmed she met Section 2 criteria; her husband, having been included throughout, supported the admission. He later contacted the team to thank us for the respectful approach, and she was discharged with a full community care package after 21 days.
