Aperçu — adapté à Reeson Education

Dear Hiring Manager,

Reeson Education's Graduate Teaching Assistant vacancy at the multi-site secondary school in Barking and Dagenham is precisely the role I have been seeking to begin my career in education. With hands-on experience supporting young people in both voluntary and structured settings, and a strong understanding of SEN 1-2-1 support and classroom management, I am confident I can make a positive contribution from day one.

My background in working with children and young people has equipped me with the patience, creativity and adaptability needed to engage lower-ability pupils across a range of subjects. During a 6-month volunteering placement supporting 10 KS3 pupils with additional learning needs, I developed differentiated activities that improved lesson participation rates noticeably. I hold a current enhanced DBS certificate and take safeguarding responsibilities seriously.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped someone who was struggling to understand something — what approach did you take?

Situation: During a university volunteering programme, I was paired with a 13-year-old pupil with dyslexia who was falling behind in English comprehension. Task: My goal was to help him access the same texts as his peers without feeling singled out. Action: I broke the passage into shorter sections, used colour-coded highlighting to separate key ideas, and read aloud with him before asking questions verbally rather than in writing. I also introduced a simple mind-map template he could reuse independently. Result: Within four sessions over two weeks, he completed his first full comprehension exercise unaided and his class teacher noted a marked improvement in his confidence during group discussions.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to stay patient under pressure when working with a young person or child.

Situation: While volunteering at an after-school club, I was supporting a Year 9 pupil with ADHD who became increasingly frustrated during a maths task and pushed the worksheet away, refusing to continue. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation without disrupting the other 11 pupils in the room. Action: I calmly moved beside him, lowered my voice, and acknowledged that the task felt difficult. I offered a two-minute break and then reintroduced the problem as a practical activity using counters rather than written numbers. Result: He re-engaged within five minutes, completed three of the five questions, and left the session in a positive mood — the supervising teacher commented on how effectively the situation had been handled.
