We are delighted to be working in Partnership with a Special Educational Needs School in Bridgend. The School supports young people from 3 to 19 years of age with Special Educational Needs. The school are currently seeking full-time members of staff to join their team of educators.

The School:

Pupils are taught within small year group classes, usually not exceeding more than 10 pupils per class, with generous staffing related to the specific needs of the class consisting of a teacher with a team of Learning Support Assistants.

The school aims to promote and develop pupils' learning, self-esteem, behaviour and confidence by providing rich and individualised learning opportunities for them to develop their skills and understanding and create an exciting school community which is child-centred, empowering and inclusive.

Aperçu — adapté à Teaching Personnel

Dear Hiring Manager,

Teaching Personnel's partnership with a Special Educational Needs school in Bridgend is precisely the environment in which I want to develop my career in education. The role of Learning Support Assistant appeals to me because of its focus on individual development plans and sensory, practical learning — approaches I believe are fundamental to meaningful progress for young people with SEN.

My background in working with children and young people has given me a grounding in child-centred support, behaviour management, and building the kind of consistent, trusting relationships that pupils aged 3–19 with complex needs rely on. I hold an Enhanced DBS and am prepared to complete the Education Workforce Council registration process without delay.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a trusting relationship with a young person who was initially reluctant to engage.

Situation: During a 10-week school placement, I was assigned to support a 9-year-old with autism who refused to participate in group activities and would often leave the classroom. Task: My goal was to help him feel safe enough to engage with at least one structured activity per session. Action: I spent the first two weeks simply sitting near him during free time, following his lead on topics he enjoyed — specifically trains — and gradually introduced short, low-pressure tasks linked to his interests. I coordinated with the class teacher to adjust his individual plan. Result: By week six, he was joining group sessions for 20 minutes at a time, and his teacher noted a marked reduction in exit behaviours — from roughly 5 per day to fewer than 1.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm and positive under pressure when working with a child or young person.

Situation: While volunteering at an after-school club, a 12-year-old with ADHD became extremely distressed when a planned activity was cancelled at short notice, escalating to shouting and knocking over furniture. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation safely without disrupting the other 14 children in the room. Action: I calmly moved closer, used a low, steady voice, and offered him a quiet corner with a sensory fidget tool he responded well to. I avoided confrontation and gave him a simple choice between two alternative activities. I also discreetly signalled to a colleague to manage the wider group. Result: Within 8 minutes he had settled, rejoined the group for the alternative activity, and the session continued without further incident.
