1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully supported a pupil who was struggling to engage with a learning activity.

Situation: During a KS1 phonics session at a 300-pupil primary school in Hertfordshire, a 6-year-old with speech and language difficulties was becoming increasingly disengaged and distressed. Task: My role was to provide 1:1 support and find an approach that would re-engage him without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I moved alongside him quietly, introduced tactile letter cards instead of the whiteboard activity, and used short, positive prompts every two minutes to maintain focus. I also liaised with the class teacher during the break to adjust his next session plan. Result: He completed the activity independently within 15 minutes and his class teacher noted a marked improvement in his participation over the following three weeks.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to a new classroom environment or school setting.

Situation: I was placed at a new primary school in Watford with only one hour's notice, covering a Year 2 class whose regular TA was absent. Task: I needed to familiarise myself with the classroom routines, the teacher's lesson plan and the needs of two pupils with SEN support plans — all before the 8:30am start. Action: I introduced myself to the class teacher immediately, reviewed the two SEN plans in the staffroom, and positioned myself near the pupils identified as needing additional support. I followed the teacher's lead throughout and checked in every 20 minutes. Result: The session ran without disruption, the class teacher provided positive verbal feedback, and I was requested to return to that school the following week.
