1Question

Tell me about a time you adapted your teaching approach to support a pupil who was struggling to engage with Art.

Situation: During a Year 10 GCSE Art unit on portraiture, one pupil consistently disengaged and submitted incomplete sketchbook work across four consecutive lessons. Task: I needed to understand the barrier and re-engage the pupil before the controlled assessment deadline, which was six weeks away. Action: I arranged a brief one-to-one conversation and discovered the pupil felt self-conscious about drawing faces. I introduced photography and digital manipulation as an alternative entry point, allowing the pupil to build confidence before returning to traditional media. I also paired them with a peer for one session per week. Result: The pupil submitted a complete portfolio on time and achieved a Grade 6, up from a predicted Grade 3, and continued to attend after-school Art club voluntarily for the remainder of the year.
2Question

Give an example of how you have used CPD or professional feedback to meaningfully change your classroom practice.

Situation: Following a department peer observation in my second year of teaching, my head of department noted that my questioning in Art lessons was predominantly directed at confident volunteers, leaving quieter pupils underassessed. Task: I committed to addressing this before my next formal observation, scheduled eight weeks later. Action: I attended a whole-school CPD session on cold-calling and no-hands questioning, then restructured my lesson plans to include a randomised lolly-stick system and targeted open questions mapped to specific pupils. I also introduced exit tickets at the end of each lesson to gather written responses from every learner. Result: My subsequent observation was graded 'Good with Outstanding features', and my end-of-term pupil progress data showed a 15% reduction in the gap between my highest and lowest attaining pupils.
