Aperçu — adapté à Reed

Dear Hiring Manager,

With over two years' post-qualification experience in commercial litigation, I was immediately drawn to this Solicitor/Legal Executive opportunity at your Peterborough firm. My hands-on background in professional negligence and debt recovery, combined with a track record of managing varied caseloads autonomously, aligns directly with the requirements outlined in your advert.

My background in commercial litigation encompasses contentious matters across contract disputes, lease disagreements, and commercial property — the precise areas your firm handles. I am adept at evaluating claim merits, advising clients on legal strategy, and negotiating settlements efficiently. I also actively contribute to business development through networking and client relationship management, which I understand is a valued part of this role.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly complex or high-value litigation matter from instruction through to resolution — what was your approach?

Situation: A manufacturing client instructed me on a professional negligence claim against their former accountants, with losses estimated at £380,000. Task: I needed to assess liability, gather expert evidence, and manage the client's expectations throughout a 14-month process. Action: I commissioned an independent accountancy expert, drafted a detailed Letter of Claim, and engaged in without-prejudice negotiations with the defendant's insurers. When initial offers were inadequate, I issued proceedings in the High Court and prepared a comprehensive trial bundle. Result: The matter settled at a mediation for £310,000, avoiding a contested trial and saving the client an estimated £45,000 in further legal costs. The client subsequently instructed the firm on two additional commercial matters.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to prioritise competing deadlines across multiple litigation files. How did you manage this?

Situation: During a particularly busy quarter, I was simultaneously managing 48 active files, with three court deadlines falling within the same five-day window. Task: I needed to ensure all submissions were filed accurately and on time without compromising quality. Action: I created a prioritised task schedule at the start of each week, delegated initial drafting of one witness statement to a paralegal under my supervision, and communicated proactively with two clients to manage expectations around response timelines. I also flagged the workload to my supervising partner, who temporarily reassigned two files. Result: All three deadlines were met without any court sanctions, the paralegal's draft required only minor amendments, and client satisfaction scores for that quarter remained at 94%.
