About the role:

The Customs & Excise Advisor will provide dedicated support to bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) business. The position is responsible for advising on the customs and excise implications of importing, exporting, storing, processing and moving commodities across borders in the UK, Europe and globally, including products subject to both customs & excise duty. In addition to delivering technical guidance, the role contributes to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at strengthening supply-chain risk management.

  • Provide clear, practical guidance on classification, origin, valuation and customs procedures across the UK, EU and global jurisdictions

  • Support deal structuring and market entry decisions, ensuring customs and excise considerations are embedded early

  • Identify and manage indirect tax risks, aligning with bp’s Indirect Tax Compliance Framework (ITCF)

  • Design and implement simplified, scalable processes to enhance compliance and improve operational efficiency

  • Respond proactively to regulatory and geopolitical changes, supporting business continuity and risk mitigation

  • Build strong relationships with a broad stakeholder group, including traders, operators, commercial teams and tax colleagues

What we’re looking for:

Essential experience & skills

  • Strong expertise in customs classification, origin, valuation, customs clearance processes, preferably in both EU and UK or even beyound

  • Experience supporting cross-border movements of goods in complex, fast-paced environments

  • Ability to translate technical tax concepts into clear, commercially relevant advice

  • Proven stakeholder management skills, with confidence working with commercial and operational teams

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate effectively in dynamic, evolving environments

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of UK/EU excise duty regulations

  • Experience in energy, commodities, trading or logistics environments

  • Familiarity with customs systems, automation or digitalisation initiatives (e.g., SAP GTS or similar tools)

  • Project management experience across regulatory or business change initiatives

Our tips for applying

5 recommandations générées par notre IA pour maximiser vos chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with explicit customs and excise expertise, mirroring the advert's emphasis on 'strong expertise in customs classification, origin, valuation and customs clearance processes' across UK and EU jurisdictions.

2

📊 Quantify your compliance impact: e.g. 'Advised on customs classification for 200+ commodity movements per quarter, reducing duty exposure by £350k annually'.

3

🎯 Highlight experience advising trading or origination teams specifically — the advert names 'traders, operators, commercial teams' as key stakeholders, so demonstrate you can translate technical customs rules into commercial language.

4

🌐 Call out any experience beyond UK/EU customs (e.g. global jurisdictions, emerging markets) as the advert explicitly values candidates with expertise 'beyond' UK and EU.

5

🤝 Include a dedicated 'Key Achievements' section referencing process improvement or scalable compliance frameworks you have designed, directly reflecting the advert's requirement to 'design and implement simplified, scalable processes'.

Aperçu — adapté à Appcast Enterprise

Dear Hiring Manager,

bp's Customs & Excise Tax Advisor position within Supply, Trading & Shipping is precisely where my expertise in customs classification, rules of origin and cross-border compliance adds immediate value. Having spent several years advising commercial and trading teams on the customs and excise implications of complex commodity movements across UK and EU jurisdictions, I understand the pace and precision this environment demands.

My background in indirect tax compliance includes designing scalable customs procedures that reduced clearance delays by 30% across a 12-country supply chain, as well as translating technical tariff classification decisions into commercially relevant guidance for non-tax colleagues under tight deal timelines. I have direct experience aligning customs risk management with broader indirect tax frameworks, supporting both market entry decisions and ongoing regulatory change.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to explain a complex customs or excise issue to a non-tax commercial colleague at short notice. How did you ensure they understood the commercial impact?

Situation: A trader at my previous employer was about to execute a deal involving refined petroleum products moving from the Netherlands to the UK, unaware that post-Brexit rules of origin requirements would trigger a 3.5% customs duty charge worth approximately £120,000. Task: I had 90 minutes before contract sign-off to brief the trader and the commercial director. Action: I prepared a one-page visual summary mapping the duty cost against the deal margin, avoided technical jargon, and proposed an alternative routing via a bonded warehouse that preserved preferential origin status. Result: The trader restructured the deal using my recommended approach, saving £118,000 in duty and completing the transaction on schedule. The commercial director subsequently requested a standing monthly customs briefing for the trading desk.
2Question

Tell me about a situation where a regulatory or geopolitical change required you to rapidly adapt customs compliance processes. What did you do?

Situation: When the UK introduced the full customs controls regime in January 2022, my employer's supply chain team was still operating under the temporary easements and had not updated import declaration procedures for 14 commodity lines. Task: As the customs lead, I was responsible for ensuring zero disruption to inbound shipments within a four-week window. Action: I conducted a rapid gap analysis across all commodity flows, prioritised the 6 highest-volume lines, retrained 3 customs agents on updated CHIEF/CDS requirements, and introduced a daily clearance monitoring dashboard. Result: We achieved 100% on-time clearance in the first month of full controls with no penalties, and the monitoring dashboard was adopted by two other business units within the organisation.
