1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new care environment

When I started as a bank nurse, I was assigned to a 45-bed dementia unit I'd never worked in before. The situation required immediate adaptation as they were short-staffed during a night shift. I quickly familiarised myself with their medication administration system and care protocols by shadowing the charge nurse for 30 minutes. I then took responsibility for 12 residents, ensuring all medications were administered safely and documenting care according to their specific procedures. By morning, I had successfully completed all care tasks without incident, and the manager praised my quick adaptation, leading to regular shifts at that facility.
2Question

Describe a situation where you showed empathy towards a distressed resident

I encountered an 82-year-old resident with dementia who became extremely agitated every evening, repeatedly asking for her deceased husband. Rather than simply redirecting her, I sat with her and listened to her stories about their 50-year marriage. I discovered she felt most calm when holding a photograph of them together. I worked with the family to create a memory box with photos and mementos, which I would bring out during her distressed episodes. This approach reduced her evening anxiety by 80%, and she began looking forward to our memory sessions, significantly improving her overall wellbeing.
