Job Introduction

At Turning Point, we are recognised leaders in helping people recover from addiction and regain control of their lives. By providing the right support at the right time and making sure that people can find all the help they need through a single point of contact, we have grown into one of the largest providers of substance use services in England and Wales. Right now, we are looking for a talented Practitioner Psychologist to ensure the effective management, development, and delivery of all psycho-social interventions within newly formed team based within our substance use services in the London boroughs - City of London and Hackney.

The City & Hackney Recovery service is a free and confidential service for adults who would like support with their drug and alcohol use.

We are an integrated, well established and high performing service. Supported by sub-contractors – Mind, NHS Homerton and London Friend - as well as multiple local partners working closely together so that the people we support don’t have to navigate their way between different parts of the system on their own.

Role Responsibility

You will offer clinical guidance, training and leadership to a team that delivers psycho-social interventions to both individuals and groups. You will use your expertise to build on a range of innovative approaches with people who use substances and experience mental health difficulties. In addition to being responsible for the systematic governance of these and other services, you will carry a caseload of clients you offer psychological interventions to on a one-to-one basis and offer practical advice on trauma-informed evidence-based psycho-social interventions to colleagues as well as local agencies and organisations. Inspiring, developing and coordinating everyone on your team will of course, be a vital part of your role. We will also expect you to have a small caseload of service users with complex needs, providing specialist psychological assessments and therapies.

Beyond the operational level, you will contribute to the strategic direction and development of the service. This will include building strong professional links with other statutory and voluntary service providers and using your expertise to put relevant support and education structures in place. You will also explore ways to continuously improve our services and integrate wider issues - housing, employment and finances, for example – into the overall treatment process. You will be invited to work with our national team of Clinical, Counselling, Forensic Psychologists and Psychotherapist, to develop psychological and psycho-social approaches used across services and to pursue a therapeutic specialism that fits with service needs.

The Ideal Candidate

You will hold a doctorate and have current registration through the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychologist, or be registered with the UKCP, BPC, or BACP as a Psychotherapist.

Your experience of leading and supervising clinical staff will ideally be supported by experience of working with substance misuse Service Users. Formal training in supervision, whilst not essential, would be desirable. Excellent communication skills, adaptability and commitment to the Recovery Agenda, will all contribute to you becoming a vital member of our clinical leadership team.

As a leading health and social care provider with more than 300 locations across England, we take real pride in the services we offer.

Aperçu — adapté à Appcastenterprise

Dear Hiring Manager,

Turning Point's reputation as one of England's largest substance use recovery providers, and the integrated City & Hackney Recovery Service's model of coordinated care, make this Practitioner Psychologist role a compelling next step. My HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist and doctoral-level training in trauma-informed, evidence-based psycho-social interventions align directly with the clinical leadership and caseload responsibilities you have outlined.

My background in substance use and dual-diagnosis services has equipped me to deliver specialist psychological assessments and individual and group therapies for clients with complex needs, while simultaneously providing clinical supervision and training to multidisciplinary colleagues. I have experience building partnerships with NHS trusts, voluntary organisations, and housing and employment services to create joined-up care pathways that reduce the burden on service users navigating multiple systems.

1Question

Tell me about a time you provided clinical leadership to a team delivering interventions to a challenging client group — what was your approach and what was the outcome?

Situation: I was the lead psychologist for a 7-person psycho-social intervention team in a community drug and alcohol service where staff were experiencing high levels of vicarious trauma and inconsistent intervention fidelity. Task: I needed to stabilise the team clinically and improve the quality of client outcomes within three months. Action: I introduced fortnightly group supervision using a structured case formulation model, delivered a two-day trauma-informed practice workshop, and created a shared intervention framework based on ACT principles. I also implemented monthly outcome monitoring using AUDIT and PHQ-9 scores. Result: Within four months, staff-reported confidence in managing complex presentations rose from 52% to 81% on internal surveys, and client session attendance improved by 22%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build professional relationships with multiple statutory and voluntary partners to improve client outcomes.

Situation: Clients in our substance use service were frequently falling through the gap between our service and local mental health teams, resulting in delayed care and disengagement. Task: I was asked to establish a clearer pathway between our service, the community mental health team, and a local housing charity. Action: I convened a quarterly multi-agency forum, co-developed a shared referral protocol, and delivered joint training sessions for 15 staff across the three organisations on dual-diagnosis identification. I also created a single-page formulation template that all three teams could use. Result: Referral response times dropped from 28 days to 11 days on average, and 9 previously disengaged clients re-entered structured treatment within the first six months of the new pathway.
