1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a young person overcome a challenge in a learning or group setting.

Situation: During a after-school homework club I volunteered at, a 14-year-old student was consistently disengaged and falling behind in English, scoring below 40% in class assessments. Task: My role was to provide one-to-one reading support twice a week for six weeks. Action: I identified that the student struggled with comprehension rather than decoding, so I introduced structured questioning techniques and visual story-mapping tools to break down texts. I also liaised with his English teacher to align our sessions with upcoming lesson content. Result: By the end of the six weeks, his comprehension scores improved to 67% and his class teacher noted a marked increase in his willingness to contribute during lessons.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to support someone who was disengaged or disruptive.

Situation: While supporting a Year 9 science lesson of 28 students, one student became visibly frustrated and began disrupting the group activity, refusing to participate. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation without disrupting the rest of the class or undermining the teacher. Action: I calmly moved alongside the student, lowered my voice, and asked a simple open question about what was making the task difficult. I discovered she had missed the previous lesson and felt lost. I quickly provided a brief written summary of the prior content and offered to work through the first question together. Result: Within five minutes she re-engaged with the activity, completed the task alongside her peers, and the lesson continued without further disruption.
