Do you have a passion for working with Early Years or Primary Schools? Are you looking for a flexible role to fit in with your lifestyle?
Would you like the opportunity to work in various schools and nurseries across Heathfield?

*Competitive rates of pay starting from £14.24*

Your new nursery

You will be working for Hays as bank staff where you will be placed in various settings including primary schools and nurseries. You will be working with children aged 3 months to 11 years, which can be tailored to your preferences. You will be able to work in your desired location in Heathfield and work around your own commitments. When the nurseries and schools are open we are inundated with work and will be able to provide you with as much or as little as you need.

Your new role

As nursery and school bank staff you will be expected to support settings, working where required; supporting the other nursery and school staff, helping set up and tidy the room, playing with the children and ensuring the environment is safe at all times. You won't be expected to complete any learning diaries, so this is a great opportunity to gain confidence and learn new skills. The role as a temporary practitioner means you have complete flexibility over the days you would like to work week by week.

What you'll need to succeed

We are looking for ideally level 2 or level 3 qualified teaching assistants/early years practitioners. However, we are open to unqualified candidates that have recent relevant experience that can be referenced. You will need to be reliable, adaptable and enthusiastic; the nurseries that you are placed in will expect you to be hands-on and willing to help out in the setting.

What you'll get in return

You will receive a competitive hourly salary including holiday pay. You will receive the support you require to settle into the nursery routine. You will have set hours for a fixed period of time, enabling you to plan your commitments or childcare where needed. This is a fantastic opportunity to work around your own schedule in your desired location while gaining experience and confidence about working with children.

2

📊 Quantify your childcare experience: e.g. 'Supported a room of 12 children aged 2–4 across 3 days per week for 6 months', to demonstrate reliability and scope.

3

🎯 Mention your Level 2 or Level 3 Early Years qualification (or equivalent relevant experience) clearly near the top of your CV, as the advert lists these as the primary requirement.

4

🌐 Include any experience across multiple settings (nurseries, primary schools, holiday clubs) to show the adaptability the advert explicitly requests for bank/supply work.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new nursery or school environment with minimal briefing.

Situation: I was called in at short notice to cover a nursery room I had never visited before, with only a 10-minute handover from the room leader. Task: I needed to settle into the routine, learn the children's names and any key needs, and support the session without disrupting the children. Action: I introduced myself calmly to the children, observed the existing routine for the first 15 minutes before taking initiative with a small group activity, and checked in with the lead practitioner at every transition. Result: The session ran without incident, the room leader fed back that I had integrated seamlessly, and I was invited back to cover the same room the following week.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in a childcare setting. What did you do?

Situation: During a free-play session at a primary school breakfast club, a 6-year-old became very distressed and began throwing resources, upsetting three other children nearby. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly while keeping the other children safe and calm. Action: I calmly moved the other children to a different activity area, then crouched to the child's level, used a quiet and steady voice, and offered a choice of two calming activities. I avoided confrontation and gave the child space to regulate. Result: Within 8 minutes the child had settled and rejoined the group. I documented the incident and briefed the class teacher, who noted my approach aligned with the school's behaviour policy.
