1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child who was struggling to settle into a nursery routine.

Situation: During a placement at a 30-place nursery, a 3-year-old boy was consistently distressed at drop-off, crying for up to 20 minutes each morning. Task: As his key worker, I was responsible for helping him build trust and settle into the daily routine. Action: I introduced a personalised visual timetable using photos of his favourite activities and greeted him each morning with a consistent, calm transition ritual involving his chosen toy. I also communicated daily with his parents to align home and nursery approaches. Result: Within 3 weeks, his settling time reduced from 20 minutes to under 5 minutes, and his parents reported noticeably lower anxiety at home on nursery mornings.
2Question

Describe a situation where you used your initiative to resolve an issue during a nursery session without direct supervision.

Situation: During an outdoor play session, the lead nursery nurse was called away to handle an urgent matter, leaving me supervising 10 children aged 2-3 alone. Task: I needed to maintain safe ratios, keep children engaged, and manage a minor conflict between two children over equipment. Action: I immediately repositioned myself to maintain sightlines across the full outdoor area, redirected the two children in conflict by introducing a cooperative sand-filling activity, and made a note of the incident for the lead nurse on her return. Result: The session continued without incident, all children remained safe, and the lead nurse commended my calm response and accurate incident record in the handover notes.
