Aperçu — adapté à Prospero Teaching

Dear Hiring Manager,

Prospero Teaching's 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant vacancy in Sunderland stands out as a role where specialist behaviour support and relationship-building directly shape a young person's progress — two areas central to my professional practice. Having worked with pupils with SEMH and SEND in UK school settings, I understand the patience and consistency required to support learners who have been excluded from mainstream education.

My background in 1:1 pupil support has equipped me with practical de-escalation techniques and an ability to identify emotional triggers before they escalate in the classroom. I have collaborated closely with class teachers to adapt learning approaches for individual pupils across KS3 and KS4, maintaining detailed communication to ensure continuity of support. I hold a current enhanced DBS certificate registered with the online update service and can provide two professional references.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a positive relationship with a pupil who was initially resistant to support.

Situation: I was assigned to support a 13-year-old pupil with SEMH who had been excluded from two previous schools and refused to engage with any adult in the classroom. Task: My goal was to establish enough trust that he would accept 1:1 support during lessons without escalating. Action: I spent the first two weeks simply being present without pressure — sitting nearby, commenting on his interests, and never forcing interaction. I worked with his form tutor to identify that he responded well to football-related topics. I introduced short, low-stakes tasks framed around those interests. Result: Within four weeks, he was completing 80% of set tasks and had reduced his classroom exits from five per week to one. His teacher noted it was the most settled he had been in six months.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain resilient when working with a particularly challenging pupil.

Situation: I supported a 15-year-old with severe SEMH whose behaviour included verbal outbursts directed at staff, occurring roughly three times per day during my first month in the role. Task: I needed to maintain consistent, calm support without taking incidents personally, while keeping the wider class environment stable. Action: I kept a daily log of triggers and shared patterns with the SENCO each Friday, which led to a revised timetable reducing the pupil's exposure to two known flashpoint lessons. I also attended a two-day de-escalation training course funded by the agency. Result: Incidents dropped from 15 per week to 4 over six weeks, and the pupil remained in the provision rather than facing a further exclusion, which had been a real risk at the outset.
