Aperçu — adapté à Tradewind Recruitment

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tradewind Recruitment's HLTA vacancy at your Westminster school stands out because it demands genuine classroom leadership — delivering lessons independently and leading targeted SEND interventions, both of which sit at the heart of my professional practice. I hold my HLTA qualification and have built substantial experience supporting pupils with a range of additional learning needs, including ASD and ADHD, across primary settings.

My background in classroom management and intervention delivery means I am confident leading a class in the teacher's absence while maintaining high expectations and an inclusive environment. I have contributed to planning and assessment cycles, feeding back pupil progress to class teachers and adapting intervention programmes accordingly.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully supported a pupil with additional learning needs to make measurable progress.

Situation: A Year 5 pupil with a diagnosis of dyslexia was reading 18 months below their chronological age and becoming increasingly disengaged in literacy lessons. Task: As the HLTA, I was asked to design and deliver a daily 20-minute phonics and reading fluency intervention. Action: I used a structured multisensory programme, adapted resources with larger font and coloured overlays, and set weekly targets agreed with the class teacher. I tracked progress using a simple reading record shared with the SENCO. Result: Over one term of 12 weeks, the pupil's reading age improved by 14 months and their classroom participation in literacy sessions visibly increased, noted in the teacher's end-of-term report.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to take full responsibility for a class unexpectedly — how did you manage it?

Situation: On a Monday morning, the Year 4 class teacher called in sick with no cover arranged, and I was asked to take the full day with 29 pupils. Task: I needed to deliver a planned maths lesson, a guided reading session, and an afternoon science activity with minimal preparation time. Action: I reviewed the teacher's planning folder, adapted the maths lesson to suit my own delivery style, and used the school's reading scheme for the literacy session. I set clear expectations at the start of the day and used a reward chart already in place in the classroom. Result: The day ran smoothly, all three sessions were completed, and the class teacher fed back that the pupils had reported enjoying the lessons. The SENCO commented positively on my behaviour management.
