  • Proven experience working at Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) level.
  • Previous experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or complex emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  • Experience working within a specialist setting, PRU, Alternative Provision, SEMH School, or similar environment.
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A calm, resilient, and proactive approach.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience supporting pupils with complex ASD and SEMH needs.
  • PRICE, Team Teach, or other positive handling/restraint training.
  • De-escalation training and experience managing challenging behaviours.
  • Experience delivering interventions and leading learning activities independently.

What the School Offers

  • A supportive and experienced leadership team.
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • PRICE training provided where required.
  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of vulnerable young people.
  • A potential permanent contract following a successful temporary period.

Nos conseils pour postuler

5 recommandations générées par notre IA pour maximiser vos chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV with your HLTA qualification and SEMH specialism in the Personal Statement — the advert lists both as non-negotiable requirements at the top of the person spec.

2

📊 Quantify your intervention work: e.g. "Delivered daily 1:1 and small-group SEMH interventions for 8 pupils, contributing to a 30% reduction in recorded behavioural incidents over one term."

3

🎯 Explicitly name any positive handling or de-escalation training (PRICE, Team Teach, or equivalent) in a dedicated 'Qualifications & Training' section, as the advert flags these as desirable differentiators.

4

🏫 Highlight any experience in specialist settings — PRU, Alternative Provision, SEMH schools — by naming the type of provision and pupil profile, as this directly mirrors the Wembley school's context.

5

🤝 Include a bullet on your multidisciplinary team working, referencing collaboration with SENCOs, therapists, or external agencies, to demonstrate the joined-up approach the school expects.

Aperçu — adapté à Philosophy Education Ltd

Dear Hiring Manager,

Philosophy Education Ltd's SEMH Higher Level Teaching Assistant role at the specialist primary school in Wembley is precisely the environment in which I have built my career — working with pupils with complex SEMH needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder demands exactly the de-escalation expertise and behaviour management skills I bring to every classroom.

My background in specialist SEMH provision includes three years supporting pupils with challenging behaviours in an Alternative Provision setting, where I delivered daily targeted interventions for small groups, implemented individual behaviour support plans, and covered classes independently under HLTA status. I hold Team Teach certification and have completed PRICE training, enabling me to respond calmly and safely to crisis situations whilst maintaining a nurturing, inclusive environment.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully de-escalated a pupil in crisis — what was the situation and what did you do?

Situation: A Year 4 pupil with SEMH needs became severely dysregulated during a transition between lessons, overturning furniture and becoming verbally aggressive toward peers. Task: As the HLTA on duty, I needed to ensure the safety of the class and support the pupil back to a regulated state without physical restraint. Action: I calmly removed other pupils from the immediate area, reduced verbal input, and used the low-arousal approach from our Team Teach training — positioning myself at the pupil's level, offering a familiar sensory object, and using short, predictable phrases. Result: The pupil de-escalated within eight minutes, returned to a nurturing space, and was reintegrated into learning within 30 minutes. No physical intervention was required and the incident was recorded and shared with the SENCO the same day.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build trust with a pupil who was highly resistant to adult support. How did you approach it?

Situation: A new Year 5 pupil joined our SEMH provision mid-term following a permanent exclusion. He refused to engage with any adult and would leave the classroom whenever approached. Task: I was assigned as his key adult and needed to establish a trusting relationship before any academic support could begin. Action: For the first two weeks I made no academic demands — I simply spent 10 minutes each morning sharing his interest in football, using a structured check-in card he could respond to non-verbally. I liaised weekly with his family to align strategies at home and school. Result: By week four he was voluntarily joining my small-group literacy intervention. By the end of term his attendance had improved from 40% to 82% and he had received zero exclusion incidents.
