1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully engaged a student who was disengaged from or anxious about Mathematics.

Situation: A Year 8 pupil with an ASC diagnosis at my previous school refused to participate in any written Maths tasks, causing her to fall significantly behind her peers. Task: I needed to re-engage her without triggering further anxiety, while still covering the required curriculum content. Action: I introduced manipulatives and visual number lines, broke tasks into three-step micro-activities, and gave her a private 'check-in' card she could place on her desk to signal when she needed a pause. I also liaised weekly with the SENCO to review her progress. Result: Within six weeks she was completing full written tasks independently, and her end-of-term assessment score rose from 34% to 61%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt a lesson plan at short notice to meet the needs of a pupil with additional needs.

Situation: Fifteen minutes before a KS4 algebra lesson, I was informed that a pupil with SEMH needs had arrived in school in a highly distressed state following an incident at home. Task: My planned group activity required sustained concentration and peer collaboration, which would have been unsuitable for him that day. Action: I quickly prepared an alternative self-paced worksheet covering the same learning objective — solving two-step equations — using a familiar format he found calming, and briefed the teaching assistant to sit alongside him. The rest of the class continued with the group task. Result: The pupil completed eight of ten questions independently, remained regulated throughout the lesson, and avoided a withdrawal, keeping his learning on track.
