1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully re-engaged a disengaged pupil and supported their transition back towards a mainstream setting.

Situation: A 14-year-old student in my SEMH class had not completed a full school day in over three months and was at risk of permanent exclusion. Task: My goal was to rebuild his engagement and create a structured pathway towards part-time mainstream attendance. Action: I worked with the school's therapeutic practitioner to design a reduced timetable starting with two 45-minute sessions daily, using his interest in construction to deliver maths through vocational tasks. I held weekly check-ins and shared progress notes with his mainstream link teacher. Result: Within 10 weeks he was attending four full days per week, and he successfully transitioned to a mainstream Year 10 class the following term with a tailored support plan in place.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain resilient when working with a student whose behaviour was particularly challenging.

Situation: A 12-year-old pupil with complex SEMH needs regularly became physically dysregulated during literacy sessions, disrupting the group of six students. Task: I needed to manage the immediate safety of the group while maintaining a therapeutic, non-confrontational approach. Action: I implemented a de-escalation protocol agreed with the SENCO, created a calm-down corner with sensory resources, and restructured literacy tasks into five-minute micro-activities. I logged every incident for 6 weeks to identify triggers, finding that transitions between tasks were the primary cause. Result: Dysregulation incidents dropped from 4 per week to fewer than 1, and the pupil completed his first full literacy unit in 8 months, earning a Bronze Award in the school's achievement programme.
