1Question

Tell me about a time you had to remain calm while supporting someone in distress

A service user I supported became extremely distressed when their routine changed due to a staff shortage. They began hitting themselves and shouting. I remained calm, used their preferred communication method of visual cards, and gave them space while staying nearby for safety. I acknowledged their feelings and offered their comfort items. Within 15 minutes, they had calmed down and we were able to discuss alternative activities. This approach prevented escalation and maintained their dignity while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
2Question

Describe how you've adapted your communication style to meet different people's needs

I supported a gentleman with autism who found verbal communication overwhelming during transitions. I learned he responded well to written schedules and visual prompts. I created personalised picture cards showing daily activities and gave him 10 minutes notice before any changes. This reduced his anxiety significantly and improved his engagement in community activities. His family noticed he became more confident in social situations, and he successfully maintained 3 new friendships through our adapted communication approach.
