Aperçu — adapté à Reeson Education

Dear Hiring Manager,

Reeson Education's SEN Teaching Assistant vacancy at the Mitcham primary school stands out precisely because of its focus on 1:1 ASD and ADHD support within a genuinely inclusive, mainstream setting — two areas where I have developed real hands-on expertise. The opportunity to collaborate directly with the SENCO and external professionals to deliver tailored intervention is exactly the kind of structured, child-centred work I am seeking.

My background in SEN support includes delivering small group and 1:1 sessions for pupils with a range of additional needs, adapting learning materials under the direction of the class teacher and contributing to positive behaviour plans. I have worked within safeguarding frameworks throughout and actively pursued CPD in speech and language strategies to broaden my practice.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a trusting relationship with a pupil who was initially resistant to support.

Situation: I was assigned to support a Year 3 pupil with ASD who refused adult interaction and would leave the classroom when approached. Task: My goal was to build enough trust for him to accept 1:1 literacy support within four weeks. Action: I spent the first week simply sitting nearby during free choice time, following his interests in trains and using them as a bridge into conversation. I introduced structured but low-pressure activities linked to his interests before gradually shifting to curriculum tasks. Result: By week three he was voluntarily sitting with me for 20-minute reading sessions, and his class teacher noted a 30% improvement in task completion by the end of the half-term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly when a pupil's behaviour escalated unexpectedly in the classroom.

Situation: During a whole-class maths lesson, a Year 4 pupil with ADHD became overwhelmed by noise and began throwing resources. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I calmly moved alongside him, used a low tone and offered a pre-agreed sensory break card — a strategy from his behaviour support plan. I guided him to the quiet intervention space and used a breathing exercise we had practised together. Result: The pupil returned to the classroom within eight minutes, completed the remaining 15 minutes of the lesson, and the incident was recorded as resolved without physical intervention — the first time in three weeks.
