📊 Quantify the scope of contracts you have advised on: e.g. 'Advised on 30+ high-value commercial contracts totalling £120M in a single financial year' to demonstrate scale.

3

🎯 Highlight any experience in public procurement, framework agreements or regulated environments prominently, as the advert flags these as key differentiators for shortlisting.

4

🤝 Include a dedicated bullet on team leadership — number of lawyers/paralegals supervised and any mentoring or development programmes you introduced, since managing the in-house team is a core responsibility.

5

🌐 If you have social housing, local government or not-for-profit sector exposure, call this out in your CV profile and a dedicated role bullet, as the advert explicitly notes it as advantageous.

1Question

Tell me about a time you influenced a senior stakeholder to adopt a more legally sound commercial position — what was your approach?

Situation: A procurement director at my previous employer was keen to proceed with a sole-supplier arrangement worth £4.5M without a competitive tender, citing time pressure. Task: I needed to steer the decision without blocking a legitimate commercial objective. Action: I prepared a concise one-page risk briefing outlining the public procurement compliance exposure, proposed a streamlined mini-competition under an existing framework that could be completed in three weeks, and presented this directly to the director and CFO. I also drafted a risk-acceptance memo for the board in case they chose to proceed regardless. Result: The director adopted the framework route, the contract was awarded compliantly within four weeks, and the process became the template for two subsequent procurements.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance commercial objectives with regulatory compliance under significant time pressure.

Situation: A strategic partnership agreement with a local authority needed to be executed within ten days to secure £2.8M in grant funding, but the draft contained indemnity clauses that exceeded our organisation's risk appetite under our governance framework. Task: I had to negotiate revised terms without losing the funding deadline. Action: I convened a same-day call with the counterparty's legal team, proposed a mutual liability cap at £500,000 with a carve-out for wilful misconduct, and escalated a single outstanding point to the General Counsel for a same-day decision. I also prepared a board resolution to authorise execution on revised terms. Result: The agreement was signed on day eight, the grant was secured in full, and the revised indemnity structure was subsequently adopted as our standard position for public sector partnerships.
