1Question

Tell me about a time during your training when a lesson did not go as planned — what did you do and what did you learn?

Situation: During my second placement, I planned a Year 3 fractions lesson that I expected to last 45 minutes, but within 15 minutes it was clear that around 18 of the 28 pupils had not grasped the prerequisite concept of equal parts. Task: I needed to recover the lesson without losing the class's engagement or falling behind the scheme of work. Action: I paused, used mini whiteboards for a quick diagnostic activity, then split the class into two groups — I reteaught the foundational concept to the larger group while my teaching assistant extended the six pupils who were ready. Result: By the end of the session, 24 of 28 pupils could correctly identify unit fractions. My mentor noted the adaptive response in my observation feedback, and I built a pre-assessment check into every subsequent lesson plan.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in the classroom. How did you handle it and what was the outcome?

Situation: In a Year 5 class of 30 pupils, one child consistently called out and disrupted group work during a 6-week literacy block, affecting the learning of surrounding pupils. Task: I needed to address the behaviour consistently while maintaining a positive relationship with the pupil and not escalating disruption. Action: I met with the class teacher and reviewed the pupil's pastoral file, discovering he responded well to visual cues. I introduced a personal behaviour chart with three green-amber-red prompts on his desk and gave him a specific classroom role — distributing resources — to channel his energy. Result: Calling-out incidents dropped from roughly 12 per session to 2 within three weeks, and his end-of-term report noted improved self-regulation. The class teacher adopted the visual cue system for two other pupils.
