1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change in a school environment.

Situation: I arrived at a Year 4 supply placement to find the planned science lesson resources were unavailable due to a timetable change. Task: I needed to deliver a full 60-minute lesson with no prepared materials within five minutes of the school day starting. Action: I drew on my knowledge of the KS2 National Curriculum and improvised an interactive lesson on habitats using everyday classroom objects, incorporating group discussion and a quick written task to assess understanding. Result: The class teacher, who observed the final 20 minutes, noted the pupils were fully engaged and on task, and the school booked me for three further days that same half-term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you supported a pupil with additional learning needs and the impact it had.

Situation: During a long-term Year 2 placement, I identified a pupil who was significantly behind peers in phonics and showed signs of anxiety during whole-class reading sessions. Task: As the class teacher for six weeks, I was responsible for closing the gap while maintaining the pupil's confidence. Action: I introduced daily five-minute one-to-one phonics check-ins using Read Write Inc resources, adapted written tasks with visual prompts, and liaised with the SENCO to align my approach with the pupil's existing support plan. Result: By the end of the placement, the pupil progressed one full phonics phase and the class teacher reported a marked reduction in reading-related anxiety at the next parents' evening.
