1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child who was struggling to settle into the school environment.

Situation: In my second year of teaching Reception, a four-year-old joined mid-term following a family move and displayed significant separation anxiety. Task: I needed to help him build trust and routine quickly without disrupting the wider class. Action: I introduced a visual daily timetable personalised to him, assigned a consistent key adult for morning transitions, and held a brief weekly check-in with his parents to share positives. I also paired him with a nurturing peer for structured play activities. Result: Within six weeks, he was arriving independently, and his end-of-term observation notes showed progress across three areas of learning, including Communication and Language.
2Question

Describe how you have collaborated with colleagues or support staff to ensure every child reached their potential.

Situation: During a spring term, our EYFS team identified that 8 of 52 children across two Reception classes were not on track in early literacy. Task: As the year group lead, I coordinated a targeted intervention plan alongside two teaching assistants and the SENCO. Action: I restructured the afternoon timetable to create three focused phonics groups, trained both TAs in the Read Write Inc. keep-up sessions, and introduced fortnightly progress reviews using tapestry observations. Result: By the end of the summer term, 6 of the 8 children had closed the gap, and the cohort's overall Good Level of Development rose from 74% to 81%.
