Our tips for applying

5 recommandations générées par notre IA pour maximiser vos chances.

1

⭐ Open your Personal Statement with your English degree classification and any dissertation or module focus on language, literacy, or education, as the advert specifically seeks subject knowledge depth.

2

📊 Quantify any tutoring, mentoring, or volunteering experience: e.g. 'Delivered weekly 1:1 reading sessions to 6 GCSE students over 8 months, improving average reading age by 12 months'.

3

🎯 Highlight any SEND awareness or experience explicitly — the advert flags SEND support as a requirement, so even a module, placement, or volunteering context is worth naming.

4

🌐 If you have experience in publishing, journalism, or communications, frame it as evidence of applied literacy skills transferable to classroom reading and writing support.

5

🤝 Include a brief section on school-based or youth-facing experience (e.g. tutoring, youth clubs, summer schools) as Academics and their partner schools in Sutton will prioritise candidates who demonstrate comfort working with young people.

Aperçu — adapté à Academics

Dear Hiring Manager,

Academics' Graduate Teaching Assistant programme in Sutton is precisely the school-based foundation I have been seeking to apply my English degree in a practical educational context. With a strong grounding in literacy development, reading comprehension, and analytical writing — and a genuine commitment to supporting young people's learning — I am confident I can contribute meaningfully to the secondary schools you partner with across South West London from September 2026.

My background in English has equipped me with the subject knowledge and communication skills to support students across KS3–KS5, including those with additional learning needs. During my degree, I developed the ability to break down complex texts and adapt explanations for different audiences — a skill I am keen to apply in 1:1 and small group intervention settings. I have also volunteered as a reading mentor with a local literacy charity, supporting 8 students over 6 months to improve their comprehension and confidence.

1Question

Tell me about a time you explained a complex concept to someone who was struggling to understand it.

Situation: During my final year at university, I volunteered as a peer mentor supporting a first-year student who was struggling with literary analysis essays. Task: She needed to understand how to construct an argument using textual evidence — a skill assessed in her upcoming assignment worth 40% of her module grade. Action: I broke the process into three steps, using a poem she already enjoyed as a worked example. I created a simple annotation framework and practised it with her across two one-hour sessions. Result: She submitted her essay on time and received a 2:1 grade — her first in that module. She told her tutor the mentoring sessions had been the turning point in her understanding.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build a relationship with someone who was initially reluctant to engage with you.

Situation: During a summer reading programme at a local library, I was paired with a 13-year-old boy who had been referred by his school but was visibly disengaged and monosyllabic in our first session. Task: My goal was to complete six weekly reading sessions with him and improve his reading fluency scores. Action: Rather than starting with the prescribed texts, I spent the first session asking about his interests and sourced a graphic novel adaptation of a book linked to his favourite video game. I gradually introduced longer prose passages over four weeks. Result: By session five he was reading independently for 20 minutes without prompting, and his end-of-programme reading assessment showed a four-month improvement in reading age.
