1Question

Tell me about a time you had to diagnose and repair a complex electrical fault under time pressure.

Situation: During a routine maintenance visit at a logistics warehouse, I discovered that 8 emergency lighting units had failed simultaneously two hours before a scheduled safety inspection. Task: I needed to identify the root cause and restore full function before the inspector arrived. Action: I systematically traced the circuit back to a corroded junction box that had caused a cascading failure across the zone. I replaced the junction box, re-terminated the connections, and tested each unit individually against BS 5266 standards. Result: All 8 units passed the inspection with no deficiencies noted, and the client avoided a potential enforcement notice. The site manager requested me personally for all future visits.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to explain a technical issue to a non-technical client — how did you approach it?

Situation: A facilities manager at a retail park was concerned about why 3 emergency lighting fittings kept tripping the circuit breaker, and was frustrated after two previous visits from another contractor had not resolved it. Task: I needed to explain the underlying cause clearly and rebuild their confidence in the repair process. Action: I used a simple analogy comparing the overloaded circuit to too many appliances on one plug, then walked them through a printed circuit diagram highlighting the fault location. I explained each step I would take and gave a realistic timeline. Result: The client approved the additional remedial work on the spot — a £1,800 job — and signed a 12-month maintenance contract worth £6,400 shortly afterwards.
