1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child or young person with additional needs — what approach did you take?

Situation: During a six-month placement at a primary school, I was assigned to support a 9-year-old with autism who struggled with transitions between lessons, often becoming dysregulated and refusing to enter classrooms. Task: My role was to reduce the frequency of these incidents and help him access learning more consistently. Action: I worked with the class teacher to introduce a visual timetable and a five-minute sensory break before each transition, using a weighted lap pad he found calming. I also delivered two 20-minute 1:1 regulation sessions per week. Result: Within half a term, classroom refusals dropped from roughly four per day to fewer than one, and his teacher reported noticeably improved focus during morning lessons.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to collaborate closely with a qualified professional to deliver a planned intervention.

Situation: At a community childcare setting, a speech and language therapist was running a communication programme for three children with complex learning needs and needed an additional support worker. Task: I was asked to co-deliver weekly small group sessions and carry out daily five-minute practice activities between formal sessions. Action: I attended a briefing with the therapist, took detailed notes on each child's targets, and kept a daily log of responses and any difficulties. I flagged one child's regression to the therapist promptly, which led to a revised approach. Result: After eight weeks, all three children met at least two of their three communication targets, and the therapist cited the consistency of daily practice as a key factor in their progress.
