Aperçu — adapté à Tradewind Recruitment

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tradewind Recruitment's ECT placements across Scarborough's primary schools offer exactly the structured start I am looking for as I complete my PGCE this summer. I am keen to contribute strong KS2 lesson planning and classroom management skills from day one, whether on a daily supply basis now or through a long-term ECT-scale placement from September 2026.

My background in primary education includes a 12-week placement at a 350-pupil school in North Yorkshire, where I delivered differentiated literacy and numeracy lessons to Year 4 pupils and received commendation from my mentor for behaviour management and pupil engagement. I have also begun CPD modules through the National College to support my ECT induction year.

1Question

Tell me about a time you adapted a lesson plan on the spot because it was not working as expected.

Situation: During a Year 5 fractions lesson on my second placement, it became clear within 10 minutes that two-thirds of the class had not retained the prior knowledge the lesson assumed. Task: I needed to salvage the session without losing engagement or falling behind the scheme of work. Action: I paused the planned activity, introduced a quick concrete manipulative exercise using paper folding to rebuild understanding of equivalent fractions, then re-introduced the original task in smaller steps. Result: 22 of 27 pupils completed the core objective by the end of the lesson, and my mentor noted the adaptation in my formal observation as evidence of responsive teaching.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build rapport quickly with a class you had not met before.

Situation: On a Monday morning supply day at a 420-pupil primary school in Scarborough, I was assigned a Year 3 class I had never taught, with no handover notes from the class teacher. Task: I had to establish authority and a positive working relationship within the first 15 minutes to ensure a productive day. Action: I introduced a brief 'two truths and a lie' activity, learned 10 pupils' names by the first break using a seating plan I created from the register, and maintained consistent use of the school's behaviour chart throughout the day. Result: The class completed all set work, and the deputy head commented that the day had run more smoothly than previous supply cover.
