1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child who was struggling emotionally or socially in a classroom setting.

Situation: During a Nursery placement, a 3-year-old child was experiencing significant separation anxiety each morning, which disrupted the start of the school day for the whole class. Task: My role was to help the child settle and feel safe while ensuring the rest of the group could begin their morning activities. Action: I introduced a consistent arrival routine — greeting the child at the door, using a comfort object from home, and spending five minutes in a quiet corner with a familiar book before joining the group. I also communicated daily with the parent to maintain consistency. Result: Within three weeks, the child was settling independently within five minutes of arrival, and the parent reported noticeably reduced anxiety at home on school mornings.
2Question

Describe a challenging behaviour you encountered with a young child and how you managed it positively.

Situation: A Reception pupil was regularly disrupting group reading sessions by shouting out and refusing to sit with the class, which was affecting the learning of 7 other children in the group. Task: I needed to address the behaviour without escalating the situation or singling the child out negatively. Action: I worked with the class teacher to introduce a visual behaviour chart and agreed on two simple rules for group time. I gave the child a specific role — holding the story book — which gave them a sense of responsibility. I also used a quiet signal rather than verbal correction. Result: Disruptive incidents during group reading reduced from daily occurrences to roughly once a week within a fortnight, and the child began volunteering answers during sessions.
