Aperçu — adapté à Specsavers

Dear Hiring Manager,

Specsavers' reputation for putting customers at the heart of every interaction is precisely what draws me to the Optical Assistant position at your High Wycombe store. With hands-on experience in optical dispensing and a solid grounding in optical terminology, I am confident I can contribute to the outstanding store environment your team is known for.

My background in optical retail has equipped me with the skills to guide customers through frame and lens selections, handle complex prescription queries, and maintain a welcoming, efficient store floor. I am equally comfortable supporting audiology customers, having developed a working knowledge of hearing care products and terminology.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered outstanding customer service in a busy retail or optical environment.

Situation: During a Saturday rush at my previous optical practice, we had a 45-minute backlog and a customer became visibly frustrated after waiting to collect her first pair of varifocals. Task: I needed to manage her expectations while ensuring she left satisfied and confident in her new lenses. Action: I stepped away from the till, gave her my full attention, walked her through the varifocal adaptation process with a printed guide, and adjusted the frame fit on the spot. I also flagged her for a follow-up call three days later. Result: She returned the following week to purchase a second pair of sunglasses and left a five-star Google review specifically mentioning my name.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or upset customer — how did you resolve it?

Situation: A customer came in angry because his glasses had been remade twice and still felt uncomfortable after three weeks. Task: As the assistant on duty, I had to de-escalate the situation and find a practical resolution without a manager present. Action: I listened without interrupting, reviewed the original dispensing notes, and identified that the pantoscopic tilt had not been adjusted for his prescription strength. I arranged an immediate adjustment with the dispensing optician and offered a complimentary cleaning kit as a goodwill gesture. Result: The customer left satisfied within 30 minutes, and the practice avoided a formal complaint. The incident also prompted us to add a tilt-check step to our standard collection process.
