1Question

Describe a situation where a project was running behind programme — what actions did you take to recover it?

Situation: On a £4.2M commercial fit-out project, a delayed structural steel package pushed the programme 3 weeks behind schedule at RIBA Stage 4. Task: As Project Manager, I needed to recover the programme without increasing the agreed contract sum. Action: I convened an emergency recovery meeting with the main contractor and steel fabricator, re-sequenced follow-on trades to run concurrently where safe to do so, and negotiated a weekend working agreement for two critical weeks. I updated the programme weekly and reported progress transparently to the client. Result: The project recovered 17 days within 5 weeks, achieving practical completion only 2 days beyond the original date, with no cost overrun to the client.
2Question

Give an example of a time you had to coordinate multiple stakeholders with conflicting priorities on a single project.

Situation: On a £6.8M education sector new-build, the school's facilities manager, the local authority client team and the principal contractor each held conflicting views on the phasing of handover to minimise disruption to the academic year. Task: I needed to align three parties with different operational priorities to agree a single phased handover plan. Action: I facilitated a structured workshop, mapped each party's constraints onto a shared programme, and proposed a 3-phase handover splitting the building by teaching block. I produced a written agreement signed by all three parties within one week. Result: Phased handover was completed on schedule, the school opened the first block to pupils on the agreed date, and the client formally commended the consultancy's coordination in a post-project review.
