1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a challenging behaviour in the classroom and how you resolved it.

Situation: A Year 4 pupil in my class of 29 was regularly disrupting group work sessions, affecting the learning of peers. Task: I needed to address the behaviour without escalating it or removing the child unnecessarily. Action: I met with the pupil one-to-one during a break to understand the trigger — he found unstructured group tasks overwhelming. I introduced a visual task board and assigned him a defined role within each group. I also liaised with the SENCO to put a short pastoral support plan in place. Result: Within three weeks, his disruption incidents dropped from roughly four per session to fewer than one, and his end-of-term assessment improved by one sub-level.
2Question

Give an example of when you adapted a lesson mid-delivery because it was not meeting the needs of your class.

Situation: I was teaching a Year 4 fractions lesson to 30 pupils when it became clear within the first 15 minutes that around 18 children had not secured the prerequisite understanding of equivalent fractions. Task: I needed to pivot without losing the remaining pupils who were ready to progress. Action: I paused the lesson, split the class into two groups, set the confident learners an independent investigation task, and delivered a rapid re-teach of equivalent fractions using fraction walls with the other group. Result: A follow-up mini-assessment the next day showed 94% of the class could correctly identify equivalent fractions, compared with 62% at the start of the original lesson.
