1Question

Tell me about a time you quickly built rapport with a new class and staff team in an unfamiliar school.

Situation: I arrived at a Bradford junior school on a Monday morning with no prior briefing — the class teacher was absent due to illness. Task: I needed to establish authority and warmth with 28 Year 4 pupils and integrate with the year group team by break time. Action: I introduced a quick 'two truths and a lie' activity to learn names, reviewed the teacher's planning file during registration, and introduced myself to the phase leader before assembly to align on the day's expectations. Result: By lunchtime the phase leader commented that the class had settled better than expected, and I was re-booked for the remainder of the week.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in the classroom and how you resolved it.

Situation: During a KS2 supply placement, one pupil repeatedly disrupted literacy sessions, affecting the learning of 29 classmates. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation without removing the pupil unnecessarily or escalating to senior leadership prematurely. Action: I used a calm, low-tone redirect strategy, offered the pupil a structured choice of tasks, and quietly checked in with the SENCO at break to understand the pupil's existing support plan. Result: Disruptive incidents reduced from five in the morning session to one in the afternoon, and the SENCO noted the approach in the pupil's pastoral log as a positive intervention.
